This week's podcast is part 1 of a 2 part interview with John O'Keefe, Principal Smalltalk Architect at Instantiations. With the recent news from them - Google buying the Java business, and Instantiations becoming a pure Smalltalk play - we thought a talk with them would be interesting. We weren't wrong - John had a lot of things to say! We'll have part 2 next Sunday.

This week's podcast was recorded at the recent Camp Smalltalk event in London - I spent a few minutes with Alejandro Reimondo and Frank Lesser, talking about their Lesser Smalltalk project. It's been on the Smalltalk world's radar for awhile, since they started building a VM that could run VSE images and Dolphin images; they are now concentrating on VSE.

I have a longer video presentation from the event that I'll release in a week or two; the audio for this podcast is a bit rough, since there was a fair bit of background noise.

To listen now, you can either download the mp3 edition, or the AAC edition. The AAC edition comes with chapter markers. You can subscribe to either edition of the podcast directly in iTunes; just search for Smalltalk and look in the Podcast results. You can subscribe to the mp3 edition directly using this feed, or the AAC edition using this feed using any podcatching software. You can also download the podcast in ogg format.

It is incorrect to refer to "CogVM for Squeak and Pharo" as you are doing in the introduction. Eliot's blog site correctly says Cog is developed for "Speeding Up Croquet and Squeak". Pharo is a fork of Squeak that happens to be able to run on Cog but Cog isn't developed in or specifically for Pharo. You might as well refer to "CogVM for Squeak and Cuis" since Cuis is another fork of Squeak that can run on Cog as well.

This week's podcast features our Product Manager, Arden Thomas. This is part 2 of two; if you didn't listen to part 1, you might want to grab that episode first. In this podcast, Arden discusses three things with us:

The upcoming release of ObjectStudio 8.2.1

The upcoming release of VisualWorks 7.7.1

The roadmap going forward

We didn't discuss WebVelocity 1.1, since we covered that on a recent podcast. Arden is anxious to hear what your needs are in Cincom Smalltalk - if you like what you hear this week (and next; this is part 1 of a 2 part podcast), let him know. And if you think there's something else we should be doing - let him know about that, too!

Industry Misinterpretations does a good job of mixing Cincom centric material with stuff from the wider Smalltalk world -but three Cincom episodes in a row is a bit much (for me at least)

If you are looking for show ideas, I bet your listeners could come up with topics, questions and interesting smalltalkers to interview, if you asked.

This week's podcast is part 2 of our conversation with John Maloney and John McIntosh about Scratch. In this segment, we delved into the issues surrounding Scratch's removal from the app store - suffice to say, it wasn't the new policies they ran afoul of, it was the existing ones (using an interpreter, having downloadable, executable content for the application itself).

It was a fun talk, and things sound somewhat hopeful with respect to the app store - listen to the podcast to find out what I mean by that! To get Scratch now, visit the website and become one of the millions who've created an uploaded a project.

This week's podcast is part one of our 2 part podcast with John Maloney, one of the members of the Scratch project at MIT, and John Mcintosh, the long time Smalltalker who's been developing the Squeak port to the iPod/iPhone/iPad. Recently, John's port ran into issues with Apple, and Scratch has been removed from the app store. As you'll find out in the podcast, that's not due to the new language restrictions - although those do raise a different bar. In any event, it was a fun podcast, and we learned a lot about Scratch, which is a great environment for teachin kids about software.
